“With Friends Like These … An Evening for James Patterson”

In 1985, several Jackson, Miss., bands pooled their resources and put together a modest compilation album of local music entitled “Familiarity Breeds Contempt,” the name a snark-laden jab at the era’s competitive nature, which had a tendency to strain even the closest friendships.

Thirty-three years later, all it took was the news of a mutual friend’s medical woes to bring many of those same musicians together for the first time in years to rally around a common cause.

“With Friends Like These … An Evening for James Patterson” will exhibit their appreciation for the noted Mississippi photographer who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in late May.

Patterson, a Jackson native, is a long-time pal and collaborator to the Jackson music scene. In addition to his portraits of players and artists, as well as his work on album and CD covers, he has hosted some of the city’s most unique performances in his Fondren gallery. He is currently undergoing out-patient treatment.

“With Friends Like These…” takes place on Sat., Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. at Duling Hall and will feature performances from “Familiarity…” alumni such as the Windbreakers, Radio London, Beat Temptation, and Used Goods, as well as Wyatt Waters, Lee Barber, Bark, and other special guests.

Admission is $10 adv / $15 door and all proceeds go toward James Patterson’s medical expenses.

“James has been an enthusiastic supporter of Jackson music as long as I can remember,” said Tim Lee of Beat Temptation, the Windbreakers, and Bark. “And The Studio (home of Patterson Photography and Blaylock Photography) has turned out to be a really cool place for intimate live music.
